Brief history
The origin of the castle dates to 1304 when the knight family Wilre built a small stronghold. The castle got its fame when in 1635 P.P. Rubens bought it and rebuilt it into a castle in Flemish Renaissance style. After his death, his second wife, Helena Fourment, stayed in the castle. In 1792, the castle was converted into a state prison. It is now privately owned and not open the public. For our medieval themed events, however, this historic site is eager to show its secrets.
