Brief history
The oldest traces of occupation date from the 6th century. Below the fountain at the inner garden are the foundations of an 8th century Roman tower. The present castle is what is left from an originally U-shaped castle. In all probability, it dates from around 1460. The oldest inscription, found on a corbel on the ground floor, which was often applied when the property changed ownership, dates from 1523. In this oldest part, the Knights’ Hall and the library are situated, which can both be hired for meetings up to 16 persons.
Destructions by gangs of robbers and fires led to the current shape of the building, with a front extension dating from 1627, a small northern wing from 1760 and a lean-to shed dating from 1780 on the right side of the inner court. Hubert de Plaines and Gilles II Berthout, Lord of Berlaer, who was killed during a knight tournament around the castle domain, were its best-known occupants.
Possibilities
Inside, it is only possible to hire the entrance hall, the Knights’ Hall (+ adjacent buffet space) and the library as an “outbreak room”. The Knights’ Hall is perfect for meetings and seminars, if necessary linked to a teambuilding activity. Beamer, plasma TV, Wi-Fi , flipchart are free at your disposal. The rest of the castle is in private occupation.
The inner court and pleasure grounds (garden), both situated within the castle moat, lend themselves perfectly to medieval theme events and gourmet markets. The surrounding fields are often used for teambuilding activities or company parties.. Parking , sanitary facilities and utility facilities are present.
Capacity
The Knights’ Hall only seats, at the monumental gothic table, a maximum of 16 persons.
The surrounding fields included, staff parties or family days for up to 10.000 persons can take place here (cf. public event "Quondam”)
