ING Family Day – Castle of Groot-Bijgaarden
For one day, grandparents, parents and their (grand) children became immersed in the life of our ancestors. In the “shield-bearer school”, both young and old could learn new crafts like cooking, candle making, blacksmithing, lucetting and coin making. Agility and athleticism are firsthand tested with stump punches, horseshoe throwing, (cross)archery, javelin throwing, pikemen training and sword fights initiation.
The red line throughout this day were the many medieval animations, including a magician, beggar, fortune teller, jester, fire eaters, jugglers, troubadours, … In the afternoon, all attendees were invited in the orangery for a grand medieval banquet, with a medieval charade as an extra for the kids.
As closure for the afternoon, there was jousting and sword fighting between several knights. Afterwards there was a “battle of the little man”, where the kids could apply their new knowledge in a fight against the knights, all under the watchful eye of their parents and their grandparents. Once defeating the knights, when all children were tired but satisfied, they received their knight’s certificate.
